Elizabeth Eckford Desegregates at Tyson; |
The Legacy of One of the Little Rock Nine |

| ...driving it in the senior parade my senior year in high school; little
did I know I was making history.
Today, however, it all seems a bit eerie and ironic. The year (1957), the car being
selected to open the movie, the Little Rock School system, and my driving that same car 40
years later in a Little Rock School System desegregated parade. But as a young

| man I did not really get it. I did not fully understand the impact and
representation of what the movie truly meant or stood for. And while I may be a bit older
now, I am still not all that certain that I fully understand; but I do understand that I
have a part to play in shedding some light on the monster known as segregation and the
recent event held by Tyson Foods. The Tyson event which was by invitation only,
appropriately featured one of the original Little Rock Nine, 50 years later (and I am just
a bit over 32). Time does change, but does it really heal old wounds?
The time of segregation, which existed in Arkansas not that long ago, is arguably one of
the most painful, challenging and trying times in the state's history. Not since 1957 has
an entire school system in the state of Arkansas closed due to social and civil conflict.
Fortunately, for the millions of descendants like me, and all descendants for that matter,
whether or not they fully understand and appreciate the benefits by which we all advance
and excel by destroying segregation and celebrating and advancing diversity. Nine young
adults, including Eckford and countless other heroic supporters and trailblazers,
including a sitting United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower, sought the need for
change, took a stand and made the tough choices necessary to break the unmerciful yoke, or
bond if you will, by which those who came before us |

| or my generation were oh so blinded. The actions of those heroes allowed
us to ultimately unleash and set in motion some of the very advantageous advances,
bountiful benefits and courageous contributions - the ABC's that we all currently enjoy,
black or white. Opening Venue & Faith Based Services

event was comprised of two main parts, an opening, standing reception and then the
subsequent first-hand account by Eckford. Both events were held in two top notch Tyson
